
BALTIMORE BUTTER CAKE RECIPE
Recipe from “The Original Baltimore Neighborhood Cookbook” by Irina Smith & Ann Hazan
CAKE Ingredients
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 cup (2 sticks) butter, room temperature
- 2 teaspoons vanilla
- 4 eggs
BUTTER SAUCE Ingredients
- 6 tablespoons butter
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 3 tablespoons water
- 2 teaspoons vanilla
Directions
- Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
- Grease and flour a 10-inch tube pan.
- Cream butter and sugar until fluffy.
- Add vanilla and eggs one at a time.
- Sift dry ingredients and add to wet ingredients in 3 additions. Be sure to scrape bowl with spatula after each addition, being careful not to over mix.
- Bake 60-70 minutes or until a skewer comes out clean.
- Meanwhile prepare sauce. In a small saucepan, combine ingredients until butter melts. Do not boil.
- When cake is baked, remove from oven and pierce cake with a skewer or fork 10-12 times. Slowly pour hot butter sauce over cake. Cool in pan 30-40 minutes. Remove from pan and serve.
